She was noted as a pauper, formerly a laundress. In 1861 she was living in Gloucester Road, Staverton. She was recorded as wife but no husband recorded. She was a launderess. In 1871 she was living in Gloster Road, Cheltenham being a servant/housekeeper to Thomas Packer Butt. Again recorded as married, but no Mr. Bird. In 1881 she was living at 2 Alma Terrace, Westbury; being cook to Walter A Butt, Curate of Westbury.) In 1891 she was living at the New Inn, New Street, Somerton, Somerset, with her son, William Barnfield.

In the 1871 census he was living in Bonchurch, Isle of Wight, as butler to Lord Montagu.

Sadly Lucy died on 17 November 1868 (1868 4th. quarter, New Forrest, folio 2b page 363), at Beaulieu, 17 days after giving birth to Ernest Holman.

In 1871 after the death of his mother, aged 3, he was living at 2 Beaulieu Road, Beaulieu, in the care of the Williams family. In 1881 he was living at 5 Eskdale Villas in Lambeth. He joined the army and in 1891 he was a private, living in the District barracks, Caterham, Surrey.
He left the army and became a postman. He married f051 Harriet Oldfield on 17 October 1893 (4th. quarter folio 1d page 1238) at Wandsworth Registry Office. He was living at 113 Wirtemburg Street Clapham. In 1901 he was living at 22 Lawrence Street, Chelsea, (SW3 5NF). In 1911 he was living at 137 Church Road, Battersea. He had 6 daughters and 3 sons. He died on 30 May 1942 (1942 2nd. quarter, Maidenhead, folio 2c page 727) in Maidenhead aged 73, after a collision with a fire engine while riding a bicyle.

Also living with her was her mother, Eliza Gush and a boarder, Emma J Bird, (Bird was the remarried name of Caroline Barnfield, so Emma could be a relative). Eliza could have died in 1889 in Paddington (4th. quarter folio 1a page 8).

In 1881 she was living at 5 Eskdale Villas in Lambeth. In the 1891 census she was living at the New Inn, New Street, Somerton, Somerset, being an assistant in the inn. In 1901 she was a parlour maid and domestic to a retired barrister at 6 St. Matthew Gardens, Hastings.
In 1915 she left Bermuda to go to Ellis Island apparently having already been there in 1912. She travelled back and forth between those two places a fair amount over the years, her occupations stated from Nurse to diplomat. In 1920 and 1930 (U.S. census returns) she was living in New York, occupation a nurse. She travelled with a Stanley Spurling who I believe was the brother of her husband William Thomas Albert Spurling who she married on 20.1.1937. As far as I know at the moment this marriage took place in Bermuda. (Info provided by Wendy Herbert)
