At 38 years of age John became the father of Charles Edward Horder in Hampstead, 1877.

In the 1881 (census), he was living at 5 Heathfield, Wandsworth with Sofia. He was still a commercial clerk. He was also living with his son Charles E, his aunt, Mary Ashton, and Elizabeth Gidding, a servant. In the 1891 (census) he was living at 2 Heathfield Road Wandsworth Common with his sister-in-law Fiamy Mary Macloskey and his nephew, Charles Millne Macloskey. His occupation was now a jewelry clerk. In the 1901 (census) he was living at Baskerville Road, with Sarah Crisp, cook/domestic servant and Emily,a housemaid. His occupation was now a goldsmith clerk C.C. In 1911 they were living at 46 Buckingham Road, Brighton.
