In 1851 he was a lodger at Friars Goose, West Cottage, Gateshead. he was a colliery Engineer. In 1853 (1853 quarter 1, Newcastle, folio 10b page 43) he married n056 Charlotte Clarke in St. Andrews parish church in Newcastle. He is described as an engineer. He had three children, twins n027 Dorothy Sarah and n060 William James in 1855 (1855 quarter 3, Gateshead, folio 10a page 503) and son n014 Robert in 1858 (1858 quarter 3, Gateshead, folio 10a page 496). In 1861 he was living at Victoria Street, Gateshead. He was a coal Agent. In 1871 he was living at 5 Peterborough Street, Gateshead, and was a house builder. He was later described as a Land Agent and in 1881 he was living at 6 Osbourne Terrace, Gateshead, and became Mayor of Gateshead. After Charlotte's death on 11th. January 1883 (1883 quarter 1, Gateshead, folio 10a page 496), William married n061 Sarah Harley on 19 June 1884 (1884 quarter 2, Belford, folio 10b page 570). She was 30 years his junior, born in 1845 (1845 quarter 1, Newcastle Tyne, folio 25 page [579]), and, reputedly, had been his cook. He died on 7th. February 1890 (1st. quarter folio 10a page 559), at 8 Balmoral Terrace, Gateshead. He had 1 son and 1 daughter with Sarah.
