All these names are derived from a newspaper cutting saved by my grandmother, Valencia Ann Harper Olsen (née Penney) of the wedding of Herbert Gillies Penney and Lottie Affleck on Saturday 11 December 1909. n055William Affleck, the son of William and Sarah Affleck was born on 18/091814, in Urpeth, Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham. This is Urpeth in Stanley to the north of Durham. In 1851 he was a lodger at Friars Goose, West Cottage, Gateshead. he was a colliery Engineer. In 1853 (1853 quarter 1, Newcastle, folio 10b page 43) he married n056Charlotte Clarke in St. Andrews parish church in Newcastle. He is described as an engineer. He had three children, twins Dorothy Sarah and William James in 1855 and son Robert in 1858. In 1861 he was living at Victoria Street, Gateshead. He was a coal Agent. In 1871 he was living at 5 Peterborough Street, Gateshead, and was a house builder. He was later described as a Land Agent and in 1881 he was living at 6 Osbourne Terrace, Gateshead, and became Mayor of Gateshead. After Charlotte's death on 11th. January 1883 (1883 quarter 1, Gateshead, folio 10a page 496), William married Sarah Harley, n061, on 19 June 1884 (1884 quarter 2, Belford, folio 10b page 570). She was 30 years his junior and, reputedly, had been his cook. He died on 7th. February 1890 (1st. quarter folio 10a page 559), at 8 Balmoral Terrace, Gateshead. He had 1 son and 3 daughters with Sarah.

Two of her children died.

In 1861 he was living at Victoria Street, Gateshead. In 1871 he was living at 5 Peterborough Street, Gateshead. In 1881 he was living at 6 Osbourne Terrace. He was described as a Professor of Music and by 1883 as Mayor of Gateshead. He had four sons and two daughters. In 1891 he was living at Bloomfield, Gateshead and in 1901 still at Bloomfield he was a property owner. He died on 3rd. August 1910 (1910 3rd quarter, Wandsworth, folio 1d page233) while on holiday in Dunoon following an emergency operation for a burst appendix. "We have a nice photograph of the Affleck family in about 1907 or 8, perhaps, at their home, 'Bloomfield' in Gateshead. This house has been demolished and its site is roughly under the municipal library and Technical College. Robert and his father built a large part of Gateshead and many of the streets they built are still standing. One of them is called Affleck Street. I also have a lot of pictures of Robert, one of which is a copy of a portrait owned, but no longer hung, by the Gateshead Art Gallery. He was chairman of the Board of Guardians there. In 1871 she was living at 2 Victoria Place, Northallerton, with her cousin. In 1881 she was living at Church Street, Haswell, Durham, with her cousin, 4 months before her marriage. In 1891 and 1901 and 1911 she was living at Bloomfield. She died on 7th. November 1927 (1927 4th quarter, Hexham, folio 10b page 440). She had four sons and two daughters.

In 1851 he was living at Long Row, Harraton, Durham. He was an iron founder. In 1861 he was living at Cobden Terrace, Gateshead. He was an iron moulder. In 1871, 1881 and 1891 he was living at 10 Fife Street, Gateshead. He had four daughters and 1 son. He died in 1891 (2nd. quarter folio 10a page 574) in Gateshead aged 75 years.
