HENRY WILLIAM WICKS moved, at some date unknown, to London and at the time of his last Will was living in retirement at 44 Upper Gloucester Place, Dorset Square. His final occupation before retirement is recorded a 'Collector of Inland Revenue'. His final move to live with his Solicitor son was to 87, Portsdown Road, Maida Vale, where he died on 23 December 1908. GEORGE WILLIAM WICKS survived his father as did HENRY WICKS who was last reported to be living as a retired Engineer at 7 Dorset Square, London NW.
The 1881 Census shows CHARLES living with his parents and brothers William, Thomas & Frederick at 1, Park Parade EIswlck, Newcastle, Northumberland. At that time CHARLES was aged 17 and shown as
'Student of Medicine'. Brother William was in General Practice. First on Medical Register 21 Apr. 1886'. Lic. R. Coll. Phys. Edin. 1886. Lic R. Coll Surg. Edin. 1886.
In 1890 edition CHARLES is living with brother WILLIAM at 6 Park Parade, Westmoreland Road, Ncwcastle-upon-Tyne. His grandson, JULIAN CAIRNS WICKS advised that Charles appears to have fallen out with his parents by jilting his would-be wife shortly before the planned marriage in favour of 'a dancing girl'. A search of the National Marriage Index shows that he was married to MABEL ELIZABETH SMITH at South Shields, Co. Durham Register office on 3 July 1891. No member of the Wicks family appears to have witnessed the marriage. Charles was living at 52 Elswick Road at the time of his marriage. On June 4th 1892 Mabel gave birth to their only son RONALD HENRY CAIRNS WICKS at 52 Elswick Road. By 9th August 1892 they had moved to South View, Fortune Green, West Hampstead, London, from which address the birth of RONALD was registered in Newcastle. By 1896 CHARLES is working as a Medical Officer at the Timber Co. Jarrahdale, West Australia. The last entry in the Medical Directory is for 1900 ( well after his death ) and gives his address as Carnarvon, West Australia. However CHARLES' Death Certificate shows that he died on May 2nd 1898 at the North Murchison Hotel, Nannine, Western Australia, after suffering from 'Consumption' for about 45 days. His death was certified by a nurse and he was buried without a Minister of Religion being present. The Death Certificate lists wife as being 'not known' and leaving a son RONALD aged about 5 years. The orphaned RONALD was shipped back to England to live with his 'uncle FREDERICK in London.
From the Geraldton-Murchison Telegraph, Thursday May 5 1898 page 4 under the heading Nannine Nuggets written by Dryblower. No actual death notice though. "Dr Chas - Wicks, late surgeon to the hospital died today at Bonds Hotel, from consumption. The deceased had heen in a very bad state of health ever since his arrival here, and was obliged to resign his appointment at the hospital in consequence. The deceased gentleman graduated at the University of Edinburgh, and had been resident for some years in W.A. having been stationed at Jarrahdale and Carnarvon." MABEL WICKS died in Carnarvon, Western Australia death indices for 1897-1905 'Mabel E Wicks, Registry District Gas. 1238/97'. Mabel was aged 28 and died of Bright's disease on 1st February 1897 and was buried the following day in Carnarvon cemetery.

WILLIAM CAIRNS WICKS was born at 154 Land Street, Keith, Banffshire on 27th September I850. However he appears to have spent most of his young days in Maxwelltown which is on the right bank of the river Nith, at the Eastern edge of Kirkudbrightshire, directly opposite Dumfries.
William decided to become a doctor, he completed the preliminary Examination set by the Universities of Glasgow & Edinburgh although it is not known where he studied. The subjects were English and Latin which he took on 27th April 1868 and Arithmetic, Mechanics, Euclid & Algebra, Greek and French which he took on 22nd of October. William then went to Edinburgh University residing at 26, Lauriston Cardens. He took the first Professional Examination on 22nd October 1870, the written examination was in Botany, Natural History, Chemistry and Chemical Testing. It appears that he passed the last three but was only borderline in Botany as in the subsequent Oral Examination on 29th October the examiner, Professor John Hutton Balfour, recorded a' bare pass'. The second Professional Examination written papers on the 9th & 10th April 1873 covered Anatomy, Institutes of Medicine, Materia Medica, Patliology and Morbid Anatomy, Anatomy Histology, all of which he passed. The Final Professional Examination took place on 2nd & 3rd June 1874 and covered Surgery, Midwifery, Practice of Physic, Clinical Surgery, Clinical Medicine, Medical Jurisprudence and Prescriptions. The Oral Examination took place on 29th of June and covered Practice of Medicine, Midwifery, Surgery, and Medical Jurisprudence, all of which he passed. During his period of study he attended the Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary for Practical Pharmacy. It is interesting to note that he studied Clinical Surgery under Professor Lister who was later awarded a Peerage for his work on antiseptics.
William was granted L.R.C.P. Edin. in 1873 and became M.B. and C.M. in 1874. He became a House
