"The Penney family home - Waldridge House, on Lawe Road in South Shields. I think the family lived there for many years. When I was a child I remember going round the corner to visit my grandmother and Aunties Mamie (Mildred) and Jean, in their beautiful big old house overlooking the North Marine Park and the harbour. I understand that the house was named after the Waldridge coal mine which was owned by the Gillies family in the past. Waldridge village is just a few miles west of Durham city. Waldridge House suffered some bomb damage soon after the start of the war and grandmother and Aunties moved to a rented house on Sunderland Road. They rented Waldridge house to a tenant for the duration of the war. I think my Grandmother died soon after the end of the War. 1946? (1945). My aunties lived at Waldridge house till they sold it in 1950, and bought a house in Hepscott Terrace"...Alan Clive Hetherington
